Malware - Why are we loosing the battle?
Michael Sutton - Director of Product Development for iDEFENSE
Computer worms and viruses tend to follow a handful of predictable lifecycles. It was once believed that malicious code needed to exploit unknown vulnerabilities in order to propagate successfully. In 1988 a graduate student from Cornell University named Robert Morris followed this philosophy and created a worm that nearly took down the Internet. However, modern malicious code such, as Slammer and Code Red have proved devastating and costly despite exploiting known vulnerabilities. In some cases, patches were available for months ahead of attacks that would have prevented infection but they were not deployed. Many unfairly blame the apathy of system administrators for this problem but this simplistic view does not take into account the multitude of factors that prevent timely updates to vulnerable systems. In this presentation we will identify the typical lifecycles of malicious code and discuss why worms and viruses continue to propagate successfully, despite increasing efforts to prevent their devastation. We will also address measures that can be taken to combat the problem.

W-1 Cyber-Terrorism: A New Definition For A New Reality (Center/East)
Wednesday April 30, 2003 10:45 - 11:15 AM
Dan Verton - Cybercrime Columnist, Computerworld Magazine From Dan Verton's new book, Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism (McGraw-Hill, 2003), comes a comprehensive look at the past, present and high-tech future of international terrorism.
The indications and the warnings that al-Qaeda was trying to find a way to use aircraft as weapons were clearly available to the U.S. intelligence community eight years prior to Sept. 11. But nobody was paying attention. Nobody had recognized the subtle shifts that were taking place in the attack modes of terrorists. And now the same thing may be happening with respect to cyber-terrorism. From Black Ice: "The same stodgy thinking that led to the attacks of September 11, 2001, may soon lead to another devastating and crippling economic attack in cyberspace. The indications and warnings are appearing now that suggest groups such as al-Qaeda understand the usefulness of cyber-weapons to the larger strategic goals of international terrorism. The only question that remains to be answered is if America will throw off the shackles of inflexible thinking and accept the reality of cyber-terrorism.
Dan Verton is a senior writer at Computerworld based in Washington, D.C. He covers the security beat including national cybersecurity issues and homeland security. Verton is a recipient of the 2003 Jesse H.
